M.L. POUM MALAKOUL 1968 LANDSCAPE Quantity: 1 SIGNED AND DATED 1968 LOWER RIGHT OIL ON CANVAS Size 58 by 80 cm.; 22 3/4 by 31 1/2 in. exclude the Flame Size.Price : 180,000 BahtABOUT ARTIST :Poum Malakoul, born in 1910, was the son of the Royal Household minister, M.R. Pum Malakoul. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Nancy, France. Malakoul was initially an architect and designed the Erawan Hotel Bangkok, Thailand as well as the Chitrlada Palace, Monument of Victory (1941), Carlton Restaurant, Royal Hotel and Sida Club. The artist received awards for his designs of the SEATO emblem and the stamps for the Southeast Asia Peninsula Games.
In his lifetime, Malakoul was known by the royal title of Mom Luang (The Honorable) and is often cited in art publications and databases as M. L. Poum Malakoul. The artist painted many different subjects such as villages, riverboats, temples, etc. Malakoul's style was one of realism with muted colors and vast landscapes in which small figures appear in an atmosphere of extreme isolation. He felt this reflected "peacefulness, loneliness and sadness."
M.L. Poum devoted the later stages of his life to genre painting. Consequently, his works reflected tranquility and inner peace - his love for nature turned his attention to rural landscapes."
Poum Malakoul passed away in 1973. His work is held in many prestigious collections (e.g., Kasikornbank) and has been sold by top tier auction houses such as Christie's and Sotheby's. His paintings were also part of an exhibition of modern Thai masters at the Queen's Gallery in Bangkok. Malakoul's architectural designs are referenced in numerous websites and books on the history of Thailand.
